As per my earlier blog post, Chrome (Google’s home grown web browser) is not available for Linux. Its release status for Linux, as stated at Google Chrome’s download site is – “Google Chrome for Linux is in development and a team of engineers is working hard to bring it to you as soon as possible.” But seems Linux had not to wait!.
With Wine ( a Windows emulator for Linux), one can run Chrome on Linux. Several HOWTOs started floating around which required upgrading or downloading/installing specific version of Wine. While I was about to get carried away by one of these, CrossOver Chromium made its debut yesterday.
The download page offers Crossover Chromium for various flavors of Linux which includes Ubuntu, SuSe, RedHat and Mandriva.
I’m running Fedora 9 on my laptop. Since Fedora is based on RedHat (actually vice versa), I opted to download the CrossOver Chromuim for RedHat from here. It was an RPM (Linux installer) which installed like a charm.
On Fedora’s Gnome desktop, a menu item (Application>CrossOver Chromium>Chromium) got created. Clicking on it launched Google Chrome! Though it took some time (about 10 seconds) to launch.
Note:
Crossover clearly states that Crossover Chromium is a proof of concept. Hence use it for a light weighted test drive of Chrome on Linux.

@shekharg
Chrome on Winxp on virtualbox on Ubuntu was easy too….
Thanks!
Also, just wondering
a. what does desktop effects have to do with maximising the size of Chrome window?
b. your blog was rendered very nicely on Chrome on my machine ….no issues what-so-ever

This post worked as a webchunk!

What laptop do you have, and what graphics drivers is it using? That “can’t maximize” problem is interesting.

Aseem,
I guess with Compiz as the Windows Manager, the CrossOver Chromium is not able to find the dimensions of the screen. I can still drag the Chrome window from the edges and increase its window’s size. I also have IE6 installed and running on Wine (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page). It does not have this issue
Indeed. It works fine on Chrome on Windows (virtualized or not).

Kishore,
Cool. You are referring to the post “Slice out my latest post” (http://www.shekhargovindarajan.com/microsoft/slice-out-my-latest-post/)
But seems there are issues with WebChunk. It does not notify about an update. I did not get an update notification when I changed my latest post from “web slices” to “chrome on linux”. IE 8 notifies via making the bookmark bold.
Also after refreshing the WebChunk’s bookmark, the title of the bookmark remains the same i.e. “Slice out my latest post” and does not change to “Run Google Chrome on Linux”.
Another issue is, clicking on the WebChunk bookmark takes me to the home page and not to the full blog page.
On the + side: With WebChunks, you can even mark and slice content which are not Web Slices. For this, click on the WebChunks icon on the left and select “Create your own webchunk in the current page”. Then move the mouse over the content which interests.

Hi Dan,
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 (a 3.5 years old laptop)
The graphics card is an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro (128 MB dedicated DDR graphics RAM)
The graphics drivers used by X Window is “radeon”
Also, after turning off Desktop Effect, you will need to close and re-launch Chromium. Henceforth it will maximize.

Note: Above this comment was a comment from James which was spam. It is deleted now. Thanks to Dan for pointing this out
Thanks! James and thanks to the typo that led you to my blog. Henceforth. I do hope that you don’t need a typo to revisit

Tut, tut. I think that’s link spam. I would delete the comment, myself…

Dan,
R u referring to James’s comment ? It is not hyperlinked (neither his name, nor the link). Hence, not a link spam.

Your innocence is touching. Do a google search for “Anyways, I just clicked it and here I am. Your blog looks good”
and you’ll find 500 hits, all from James.
So it’s really link spam. You probably want to delete it.

hehehe, you are right. Lesson learnt.
Thanks indeed.
There were two reasons why I did not consider this a spam:
1. There were no hyperlinks
2. Akismet did not catch it.
Any idea about this site – blackhatbootcamp.com/listofwordpressblogs ?
This indeed has my blog listed. Do i need to worry about it ?

My conversation with Dan continued over E-mail. He was concious enough to not to discuss any security issues via comments on this blog.
Also found the following:

I also thought almost on the same lines as explained at the above URL. The only think I missed was to do a Google search with the comment text. Bottom line: if anyone, other than whom you know, praises your blog, get suspicious

Like mentioned in the above post, I too trusted Akismet a lot.
