Only a very few people (in the darkest corners of IRC) know that Steve Ballmer (CEO Microsoft), Steve Jobs (CEO Apple) and Linus Torwalds (father of Linux), seldom, give up their practical intellect and turn towards God to get their answers. God does exists and recently, as per a few insiders, had appeared before each of them. Thanks to their equal devotion to God as to their work.
Many may believe that Steve2 and Linus are very different personalities and have different agendas in their life and different questions for which they have been trying to find the answers. Surprising (or not so), they all had the same question to ask. Following is what they asked God:
Steve Ballmer: Hey God, seeing you gives me the same excitement as seeing Windows, when I saw it the first time.
God: Steve, this means you are really glad to see me. Im happy with your devotion to Windows, since it is an indirect devotion to me. I’m everywhere, in you, in others and even in MS Windows. Ask for a wish.
Steve Ballmer: Oh God, you have given me everything including the strength to lift and throw chairs at this age. The only answer to the only question that I’m looking for is: when will Windows become the de facto (the standard, the only used) operating system
God: Steve, Windows is dominant and is doing pretty well. Within ten years it will become the de facto, despite your mistakes like Vista.
(Steve Balmer starts crying)
God: Why are u crying my child ?
Steve Ballmer: I’m crying because this will not happen in my lifetime
God: Don’t worry my son, your name will still be remembered with WIndows.
(God disappears leaving Steve Ballmer sad as well as happy)
Next, God appears before Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs asks the same question – when will Mac OS become the de facto operating system.
God: Steve, you are my son and you are as creative as me. You create beautiful things like me. Yet it will take about 20 years for Mac OS to become a de facto OS. Being more open and less self obsessed will lead to it, but will take not less than 20 years
(Steve Jobs starts crying)
God asks: Hey why are you crying my son. I thought I gave you good news.
Steve Jobs: I’m crying because this will not happen in my lifetime.
God consoles Steve Jobs and disappears after blessing him.
Finally God appears before Linux Torvalds and blesses him for his open and free efforts.
Linus Torvalds: God, if my efforts have been so pure and unselfish, my question to you is – “WHEN WILL LINUX BECOME THE DE FACTO OPERATING SYSTEM”
(God starts crying)
Linux Torvalds: God, why r you crying
God: I’M CRYING BECAUSE THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN IN MY LIFETIME
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
DISCLAIMER: This is, as you would have guessed, A JOKE. Request you to not start arguing why God had to cry for Linux and not for Windows.
. Also, after writing this post, I felt a little guilty about the “lifetime” point. This post is a joke and I genuinely, wish the longest life to Steve, Steve and Linus.

@shekharg
LOL!!! Although given SteveJ’s health these days, I wonder if he’ll even last 1/2 the SteveB timeline mentioned above.

The way in which you are promoting Linux, definitely “LINUX BECOME THE DE FACTO OPERATING SYSTEM” in Linus life.

Strange that even after it being given away free, Linux still has a long way to go before becoming a de facto operating system.
I wonder why?
Shekhar: Don’t you think it is time that linux gurus such as yourself should embark upon a selfless mission of educating and making people aware and hence making Linux the de facto operating system?

Windows (Version P) is free too. P=Pirated
One of the few reasons that I can think of: (note: we are talking about Linux on desktops)
1. Linux is not (or hardly) pre-installed on PCs and laptops. Note that IE is popular not because it is better than Firefox. It is popular because it is pre-installed. How many users are willing to go through the pain of download, install and configuration ?
2. Linux’s use is compared to Windows and not to Mac OS. Even Apple Mac OS(the most friendly and jazzy OS) could not become de facto.
3. Windows is also associated with Windows apps (like MS Office) which people are so much used to. Linux’s alternatives for these apps keep playing the catch-up challenge.
4. Typically, you will get help and software for Linux on forums, mailing list and website and not from your neighbour or a friend sitting next to you.
5. With Windows domination it becomes difficult for a user who really wants to use Linux and communicate with others (mostly Windows users). His/her mail (sent from Thunderbird) will not look good in Outlook and vice versa. Office document written in OpenOffice loose the precise formatting in MS Office and vice versa. So many end up giving up Linux just to communicate better (esp. business users).
No. I don’t think so. People like us can be of little or no use (unless we go through a brainwash).
This is because it is in our blood to say “hey open the commandline, issue this command and the problem is fixed”. This does not work. And if things have to be done through the Linux GUI, then do you really need us ?
For this task, a person is required with the following qualification:
1. Should had been a staunch user of Windows before using Linux
2. After Windows, (S)he should have continued to use Linux for atleast a year
3. During this one year, he must not have booted into Windows, unless to recall how Windows looks.
3. Very important: (S)he must not have used the Linux commandline/console while using Linux
4. He must have used Linux for both business and personal requirements.
