It was the morning of 10th February, when I got to know that Google Buzz is rolling out to users. Was disappointed to not to spot it in my Google Apps (Standard) and in my GMail. Learnt that Google Buzz also works on Google Maps on mobile phones.

I guessed that it would require a Google Maps upgrade on the phone. Instantly fired Android Market on my Android Dev Phone 1 (a.k.a. ADP1), clicked on the Downloads tab and was greeted by an available upgrade to Google Maps – Google Maps version 4.0.0. Opted to install the upgrade hoping to spot the Buzz on the maps but alas – it wasn’t a smooth sail. After the upgrade, I fired the Google Maps app on my ADP1. clicked on Menu>Layers>Buzz and spotted a new icon on the maps. Clicking on the icon showed me a screen where I could post a new Buzz (a message).

Post a Google Buzz using Maps on Android

Along with typing a text message, this screen also allowed me to upload a new photo that I could click via the phone’s camera or select an existing picture from the Android phone’s Gallery. Once I posted a Buzz, I could see a new speech bubble on the map at my current location – determined via GPS or Cell location (without GPS). Over time, I realized, I could see only my Buzzes. Was no one else buzzing?

Buzz is not for Google Apps
Later during the day, I realized that my friends, using their GMail account, could see other’s Buzzes on their Nokia phones. Also they could not see my Buzzes.

I instantly suspected that it could be all because of using a Google Apps (not GMail) credentials on my Android phone. My Android phone is tied up with a Google Apps Standard Edition account which is not a regular GMail/Google account. That’s when I got onto the Net and this blog post confirmed my suspicion. But the confusion remained for a while. How could I post a Buzz (as said above) but not see other’s Buzzes?

So I spent the remaining day (of 10th February) and 11th February ensuring that Google Buzz indeed does not work with an Android using Google Apps account. I changed my ADP1′s Google account from Apps to a regular GMail account as explained in this blog post – Android: How to change the Google Account without a hard reset. Subsequently, I changed it back from GMail to Apps. Kept flipping the accounts several times. Witnessed a few erratic and confusing behaviour – call it caching. Eventually, I concluded the following:

Google Buzz on maps in Android works with a regular GMail account and not with a Google Apps account.

If you are switching from a Google Apps account to a GMail account on Android after installing Google Maps 4.0, refer to the following:

Launch Android Market

Click on the Downloads tab

Select Google Maps

Click on the button “Uninstall updates”. This will downgrade Google Maps.

Subsequently, reinstall/update to Google Maps 4.0.0

Now, launch Google Maps and click on Menu>Layers>Buzz

And voila, you should be able to see what others are Buzzing on the map.

Google Buzz on Maps in Android on February 10

Buzz should work, if you have switched from a Google Apps account to a GMail account before installing Google Maps 4.0.0

Clicking on a bubble shows the Buzz with Photo (if any)

A few other observations and notes:

Buzz on Google Maps for Mobile has no privacy settings. All your Buzzes along with photos will be visible to everyone.

As per my friends, Google Buzz seem to work equally well on Google Maps in Nokia and Windows Mobile. Nokia and Windows mobile users can goto http://m.google.com/maps to install/upgrade Google Maps to version 4.0.0.

As reported by friends using Nokia, the Buzzes may disappear at times. In this case, removing and adding the Buzz layer on Google Maps will show the Buzzes again.

Seems that the “speech bubbles” for Buzzes, older than a day, disappear from the map.

A list of all the Buzz at a location, along with comments

While I have been playing with Buzz on my Android for the last two days, I may soon switch back to my Google Apps account. I can’t sacrifice my official E-mails on Android for the Buzz. Hope, Google Buzz for Google Apps is released soon. In the meanwhile I will play with Google Buzz on my Gmail account

I was thrilled to spot the news about unlocked developer version of Google’s Android based phone.The news revealed a network unlocked phone called “Android Dev Phone 1″. So far, the only Android based phone which has been available is T-Mobile’s G1 – which is a network locked phone and will not work in India (where I live).

Photo of Android Dev Phone 1 from Android Market

Note that the Dev Phone is meant for developers which just means there will be no support by any company (which includes Google, T-Mobile or HTC). Still it costs as much as a consumer phone (as mentioned later).

I instantly decided to go for it. Took the first step which was to register at the Android Market place by paying $25 (Rs. 1237 approx.).

After registering, on my home page (@ Android Market), I spotted an enticing link saying:

As a registered developer, you can purchase an unlocked phone. Buy Now>>

The cost of the phone is $399 (Rs. 19,750 approx.). So far I assumed that I will be paying 1237 (for registration) + 19750 = Rs. 21,000 (approx.) for the phone. Not “so” bad. My current Windows Mobile phone costed me about Rs. 27,000.

First Stumbling Block – “Buy Now” did not work:
Clicking on “Buy Now” loaded up the same page (home page) again and again. Googled around for sometime to see if there is something specific to Firefox or India (I obviously specified my location as India). The news item said clearly that the phone can be shipped to India too.

Fortunately, when I tried again, after a couple of minutes, I was greeted by the phone’s page.

Second Stumbling Block – No GPS ?:
The buy now link which showed me the page on “Android Dev Phone 1″ mentioned the following specs of the phone:

Touch screen

Trackball

3.2 Megapixel camera with auto focus

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth v2.0

Handsfree profile v1.5

Headset profile v1.0

3G WCDMA (1700/2100 MHz)

Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

QWERTY slider keyboard

Includes 1GB MicroSD card (Can be replaced with up to 16GB card)

Included in the box

HTC Android Dev Phone 1

USB Cable

AC Adapter (with US plug)

Stereo Hands-Free Headset

Battery

Getting Starting Guide

1G Micro SD Card (inserted into Device)

Note the missing GPS. Googled again and read that the Dev Phone 1 is the same hardware as T-Mobile G1, which has built-in GPS. So I half heartedly assumed that the Dev Phone will have GPS and the page would have not mentioned it by mistake.

Third and last Stumbling Block – Shipping @ $224.60!
Yes, the sheer shipping cost of the phone was $224 (Rs. 11,100 approx). This means to grab the phone I will end up spending 1237 (for registration) + 19750 (phone’s cost) + 11000 (shipping) = Rs. 32,000 (approx.). That’s where I gave it up – buying a 32K phone with no support and maybe no GPS.

Anyone on their way back from US ?

Besides being network unlocked, I was excited to read: “Hardware unlocked – Rebuild the Android operating system, and load it onto the device”. This means I can customize – may be logos, boot up screen, text (here and there) of the core operating system, build it and load it on the phone. But this excitement MAY NOT ( still thinking ) be worth @ 32K.

Update (Mar 19, 2009): It took me 3 months to decide to go for it because now I have bricked my Windows Mobile phone (I-Mate 8502). Called up home and found that Android Dev Phone 1 has arrived! I ordered the phone on March 16, 2009 (at about 2130 hrs IST) and got it today (March 19). That is, it shipped within 3 days of the order, to New Delhi, India. I paid $571.71 (inclusive of everything) for this phone, which is yet to be unpacked. Hoping to undress (only the packaging ) it tonight. More on this deserves a new blog post.

How things change while on the move! I had been hitting the Fedora site constantly for the Fedora 10 download – last at around 20:30 hrs IST from a client’s office. While driving back, about 30 mins away from home, I checked the site on my Windows Mobile (ironic?) and I spotted “Fedora 10″ written all over the site. Rushed home at double speed.

Fired the torrent as well as direct download. The latter because, saw only one peer @ 98.7% download. Let’s see who, direct or the torrent download, wins the race on my 2 Mbps connection at home. The torrent download is not giving me more than 3KBps whereas the direct download is dicey and swinging – at times from about 260 KBps to 40 KBps

Once downloaded I have to start thinking about backing up my laptop running Fedora 9 and installing the 10. This may happen tonight, if sleep does not take over the X.

Will update this post as I sail to X from IX.

And now (Nov 27, 2008 @ 16:30 IST), my laptop runs Fedora 10 Continuing to write from Fedora 10, about it. Following is the first glimpse, with the noteworthy new wallpaper, of Fedora 10′s desktop, after the installation:

Fedora 10 Desktop

Installation
Didn’t find anything strikingly new in the installation. But worth mentioning is about ext4 filesystem. Fedora 9 started supporting this new filesystem. I skipped using ext4 on Fedora 9 fearing that it is relatively new. With Fedora 10, I decided to go with it. But seems ext4 is still getting a newbie treatment. While partitioning ext4 does not show up until you type it in as a boot option.

That is, while booting from the Fedora 10 DVD, select “Install or upgrade an existing system” from the boot menu, press tab and append ext4 to the boot options such that the boot options look as follows:

vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img ext4

But then I got struck with a doubt while doing a custom partitioning. I recalled that when I used ext4 in Fedora 9 (just to experiment), I was not able to boot into the system because Grub (the Linux boot loader) did not like ext4 (/boot was ext4). I wondered whether this problem still existed with Fedora 10. Quick and impatient browsing did not help. So I decided to select ext4 even for the /boot partition, expecting that I may face a crash after installation. But thanks to Fedora 10′s installer. It prompted me (unlike Fedora 9) to not to use ext4 for the boot partition.

Bottom line: Don’t use ext4 for /boot or the boot partition. Those who are not in a habit to create a separate /boot partition will now have to create one, if they want to use ext4 for the root (/) partition.

Remaining installation was typical Fedora like. I was expecting but did not find Netbeans during the package/software selection. Hoping that it will be available separately from the Fedora repositories.

Booting: The Wow Factor
After installation and during the boot up, we see the Fedora 10′s WOW Factor. Unlike most Linux distributions, including Fedora < 10, no cryptic text saying “booting kernel”, “starting udev” etc. A straight jump to a graphical boot with a progress bar. Is this the Wow factor? No. Can’t explain it without a video While booting the animation of the shooting blue flairs from the blue Sun is really Wow. Thanks to the new boot system so called Plymouth. Following are the links to some YouTube videos which showcase the magnificent, new, animated boot screen:

Plymouth Solar Theme in Action

I think it is really a good move to hide those cryptic boot time messages. It scares a newbie and sometimes even me when I once saw a message as follows:

“Memory for crash kernel (0×0 to 0×0) not within permissible range”

during the boot process of CentOS Linux. Upon read up, this message was claimed to be harmless despite talking about “crash kernel” Similarly it may be unnecessary to show the plethora of boot time messages, especially to a newbie and Fedora 10 does it well and even better with Plymouth. But, alas, shutdown of Fedora 10 still shows system messages on the screen.

As customary to Fedora, after the boot, I was greeted by the First Boot screen where I could setup a non-root user account, amongst others.

Finally I was dropped on the GNOME desktop (as shown in the screenshot above) and was greeted by 49 pending updates! This is something which used to surprise me before but humours me now, with all Fedoras. It has been just a day or two since the release of Fedora 10 and about 50 pending updates!. Either the releases are deadline driven or the Fedora community is indeed quite active. Anyways, being a long time Fedora user, this is just a rant.

Note: Fedora 10 does not even show the Grub menu while booting. As per Fedora 10′s release notes, the Grub menu is shown only if you have a dual boot (say with Windows and Fedora 10). Yet, to see the Grub menu, press any key after powering on your computer.

Internet Connection Sharing with Windows Mobile
One of the most talked about set of enhancements in Fedora 10 are those in the NetworkManager – a graphical applet which manages wired and wireless connection. One of the enhancements in NetworkManager is the connection sharing via WiFi ad-hoc which I will test and write about later.

This para is devoted to how easily I was able to connect my Windows Mobile (I-Mate Ultimate 8502 running Windows Mobile 6.0) via USB and was able to browse through its EDGE connection. One of the advantages of using USB to using Bluetooth is, the mobile keeps charging via USB while serving the Internet connection.

The general case is, if you are on the move and do not have access to an Internet connection (wired or WiFi), then one of the best ways is to connect your laptop via your GPRS/EDGE enabled mobile phone or PDA.

In Fedora 9, I could not get NetworkManager to work as easily for connection sharing with my mobile. I had to compile drivers (usb-rndis-lite), write configuration files and connect to the mobile from the commandline.

But with Fedora 10, its a breeze. Connect the mobile via USB, start “Internet Sharing” on the mobile and voila, you are connected! To launch “Internet Sharing” via USB on Windows Mobile 6, launch Start>Programs>Internet Sharing. Select “USB” from the “PC Connection” dropdown and for Network Connection, select your pr-configured GPRS/EDGE connection – “HUTCH (WEB)” in my case. Click on Connect. In seconds NetworkManager applet on the top right GNOME panel will show as connected to the mobile. Jet, set, browse!

Note: There are forum posts across the web which suggests to try permutations like click on the Connect (on the mobile) before connecting the mobile via USB or click on Connect after connecting the USB cable. I tried both and always found it to connect. Bottom line: whichever way, you should get connected instantly.

To be continued…

We love Firefox on our desktops and now there is Firefox for our mobiles – called Fennec. Fennec is a web browser for mobiles (phones, PDAs and small screen tablets) released by Mozilla. As of this writing, it is in Alpha 1.

Fennec Alpha 1 is available only for Nokia N810 tablets running Maemo. But I own a Windows Mobile. Fortunately, Fennec is downloadable for Windows, Linux and Mac desktops – for users (like me) to see its glimpse, test it and give feedback.

I downloaded the Linux version from here. Extracted the archive (tar -jxvf fennec-1.0a1.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2). This produced a directory named fennec. Changed to this directory and launched Fennec by issuing ./fennec.

Fennec - The first launch

With the aim not being a full fledged review of Fennec (since it is in alpha), following are a few noteworthy features:

Awesome bar: Like Firefox 3, Fennec shows the earlier visited sites as you start typing in a URL. It shows the URL and title of the sites. This allows you to quickly jump to the URL without much typing:

Awesome Bar

Optimizes Website’s dimension: Seems Fennec tries its best to horizontally fit a web page to the viewable area. A website can be scrolled vertically by dragging the mouse from bottom to top. Following is how my Blog looks in Fennec:

Shekhar Govindarajan's Blog in Fennec

Tab browsing: As hinted on the first launch screen, drag the mouse, to the right, on the Fennec window and you will see the tabs panel. It shows the preview of all the currently open tabs as shown below:

Tabbed browsing in Fennec

You can launch a new tab by clicking on the + button or remove a launched tab by clicking on the – button on the tab preview. Fennec automatically launches a separate tab for links which open in a new Window.

Back, forward and favourite buttons: Dragging the mouse towards the left reveals the typical web browser button for Back, Previous and Bookmark/Favourites.

Drag the mouse to the left to see the typical web browsing buttons

Configuration/Preferences: Clicking on the wheel button (at the bottom), shown in the above screenshot, reveals the browser’s configuration or preferences option. But I was not able to select or change any option. Either I’m doing something wrong or it is the Alpha factor.

The preferences window

Remember password: Fennec showcases the same non-intrusive remember password prompt – as in Firefox 3 and Google Chrome. The remember password prompt is displayed on the top without stopping the subsequent (to the login) page from opening:

Remember password prompt

I browsed through GMail (non mobile version) using Fennec and found it to working fine. This means Fennec will be supporting JavaScript and AJAX intensive sites.

Miscellaneous:

Fennec claims to support plugins and addons with several plugins like that for Java, Quicktime and DivX listed. But even after enabling them I could not see Java applets or Quicktime videos.

It seems to remember the data filled in form fields too and displays a small popup above the fields to assist in prefilling

Flash based websites did not work. There were no Flash plugins listed

While not a Fennec’s issue, Websites (like mine) are not detecting Fennec as a mobile browser. The user agent string emitted by Fennec (while running on a Linux desktop) is as follows:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2pre) Gecko/20081015 Fennec/1.0a1

Note that Fennec is not the first mobile browser from Mozilla. Earlier Mozilla had released a web browser called Minimo. Minimo is now found in the Mozilla archives. This means Fennec is the way forward. I had used Minimo on my earlier mobile which was a Windows Pocket PC (running Windows Mobile 2003). Minimo also supports tab browsing.

Fennec is said to use the Firefox’s design principles and the Gecko engine and hence I’m calling it the Firefox for mobiles. I’m not sure if Fennec and Firefox share the same code base.

Last but not the least, I played with Fennec on a Linux laptop with a mouse, keyword and a large screen. How well it works with a phone’s input and output devices can be told by someone who owns a Nokia tablet. It will also be interesting to see how the future versions of Fennec behave on smaller screens of mobile phones and PDAs.

Waiting eagerly for the WIndows Mobile version of Fennec …

Just read this news item in Google News (what an irony )

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121721408704288951.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Cuil pronounced as Cool is suppose to be a new search engine launched (not a beta launch) which is suppose to challenge Google in the search arena. I quickly checked out this search engine and following are a few first and quick +ves and -ves

Thumbs up

Explore by category: Being a techie, I use search for searching through technology. I searched for “php prado”. Prado is a web application framework for PHP. Cuil showed the search results. Interesting was the “Explore by category” sidebar (what does Cuil call it ?). It showed me other web application frameworks. This included CakePHP, Symfony etc. which were other PHP web application framework.

The Menubar: Again don’t know what Cuil calls it. It is the top bar below the search box on the search results page. While searching for PHP it showed me PHP Scripts, PHP Nuke, PHP Editor. Clicking on these will show results for PHP Scripts, PHP Nuke etc. This kinda helps if you want to drill down the search from PHP to PHP Scripts in particular.

Images in search: Looks nice (only aesthetically) to see some images in the search results. Cuil claims to use an algorithm to fetch the most relevant image (if any) on the web page and display it along with the search result.

To be true, I don’t like to criticize a technology piece because I can imagine the efforts gone behind it. Perhaps that’s the only reason I mentioned the above points. Honestly speaking, I didn’t find the menubar of much use and images is search is definitely a no no for a quick web surfer like me.

Thumbs Down

Safe Search Works?: I tried switching on Safe Search and searched for “porn”. It still showed me “porn.com” in the search results. Google showed no results for “porn” with “Strict” Safe Search on.

Showing porn sites and images with Safe Search On

Not mobile friendly: I tested it on my Windows Mobile 6 PDA. Find some screenshots below. Notice the horizontal scrollbars which didn’t go away even after switching to two column (bottom right link on the Cuil page). Images showed in the search results in mobile – occupies screen estate and adds to your mobile data transfer bill . Surprised to see that a newly launched and latest search engine, is not optimized for the today’s hot and ever growing platform. Even, if it had been the Cuilest on the mobile, it could have been COOL.

Erratic: While I was searching through, at times I got page saying “we didn’t find any results”. It happened quite a few times when I clicked on Page 10 (at the bottom of the page). And once when gave a space after “php” as search keyword. Hitting refresh worked at times. Not a launch quality experience, though.

Fastest crawler and 120 billion web pages ?: And yet I cannot see my blog (launched about 20 days back) in the search results, even with precise keywords like “shekhar govindarajan blog”. A recently launched site www.dare.co.in also did not show up.

I browsed Cuil using Firefox 3.0.1 on Fedora 9. Just FYI, “Add Cuil to Firefox” (the link towards the bottom of the search results) works.

Cuil on Mobile:

Update:

Cuil went down: While I was proof reading this post and tried to go back to Cuil to re-check some facts, the site is down (@ 1354 hrs IST) with a notice as follows:

“Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.

Thanks for your patience.”

Cuil back online: Noticed at 14:15 IST.

From above: “as we add more capacity”.

10 more servers gone in ?

Sent request to include this Blog: As I said above, this blog does not show up in the Cuil search results. Cuil’s FAQ page leads to this page for webmasters. Following the instructions on this page, I sent a mail to crawler at cuil dot com with the URL to this blog.

Update:

Noticed today that my blog has started appearing in Cuil. keywords: shekhar govindarajan blog

Update (Oct 3, 2008):

As of September 30th 2008, the Cuil team seems to be alive and adding new stuff (like keyboard shortcuts) – http://www.cuil.com/info/blog/2008/09/30/power-features

A quick test and found the key shortcuts for Paging and Suggestions to be working in IE 8 Beta 2, Firefox 3 (for Windows and Linux), Google Chrome (Build: 0.2.149.30). Could not get the Categories shortcut working in Linux (Fedora 9, Firefox 3.0.2). Once I hold the ALT key, I’m not able to click on the category links. This is because I’m using GNOME and in GNOME CTRL+Click moves a window.

Contrary to the earlier update, my blog has again disappeared from Cuil search results for the keywords: shekhar govindarajan blog

Update (Oct 7, 2008):

Noticed that, as opposed to sending an E-mail from a mailto link (which opened the default E-mail client like Outlook), as earlier, Cuil now has an online form to submit new website(s) to crawl. This may mean better attention to non-indexed websites because the form submit is possibly getting redirected to the concerned technicians with the appropriate subject and, perhaps, other information like source and medium of the form submit which may reveal automated (maybe unwelcomed) submits. Following is the URL to submit a site:

http://www.cuil.com/info/contact_us/feedback.php?to=crawl%20me

I resubmitted (read above) my Blog, hoping that it will get indexed, permanently, this time

Update (Nov 3, 2008): Breaking news!!! (for me, by me). Cuil now shows my blog for the keywords shekhar govindarajan blog.

Following is a simple script, written in PHP, which will send an E-mail alert to you when one or more of your Web servers is inaccessible.

<?php
/* things to edit/change */

$fileToFetch = "isalive.txt";
$mailTo = "shekhar@it4enterprise.com";
$mailFrom  = "alert@it4enterprise.com";

$websites = array(
"Website 1" => "http://www.website1.com",
"Website 2" => "http://www.website2.com",
"Website 3" => "http://www.website3.com"
);

/* end of things to edit/change */

foreach($websites as $name=>$value)
  if(!($fp = @fopen($value."/".$fileToFetch,"r")))
    mail($mailTo,"WEBSITE DOWN: ".$name,"WEBSITE DOWN: ".$name,"From: ".$mailFrom);

?>

How to use this script:

I’m assuming that you would run this script on a Linux server.

This server is (obviously) a different server/machine from the web servers that you are monitoring. It is also advisable that you use this script on a server which is not in the same network or with the same ISP as your web servers.

Substitute the values for $mailFrom, $mailTo, $websites etc. as per your setup/requirement.

Save the above code in a file called isalive.php in /opt directory (for example) on the Linux server.

Create a file called isalive.txt in your web site’s root directory such that it is accessible as http://www.yourwebsite.com/isalive.txt. A typical Linux command example: cd /var/www/html; touch isalive.txt

To run this script every 15 minutes, you can add an entry to Cron (crontab -e) as:

0,15,30,45 * * * * php -q /opt/isalive.php >> /dev/null 2>&1

How the script works:

It tries to fetch a file (can be a 0 byte file) called isalive.txt from your website. The name of this file is specified by the variable $fileToFetch.

If the file is not found it sends an E-mail to an E-mail address specified by the variable $mailTo. The mail appears to come from an E-mail address specified by the variable $mailFrom.

One or more websites (to monitor) are specified in the array variable called websites.

Why isalive.txt instead of home page

You may ask why cannot the script fetch the first page of your website and why you need to create isalive.txt. Remember this script is hitting your site frequently (15 mins). The first page of your website can be a heavy (in size) or slow (a page which is doing serveral database queries) page. Whereas isalive.txt can be as small as zero byte.

Todos

Obviously there can be more to be desired from this script (making it not so simple). For example:

The script should be configurable to send only periodic alerts or reminders, once a server is down. Currently the script will keep sending you alert every 15 mins till the time the server is back online.

Sending alerts through SMS, possibly through some free SMS gateway. Looking for any advice/suggestion here.

Perhaps the script can record the time to fetch the file and alert if the server is slow (in terms of bandwidth,load etc.)

How it works for me

Very recently, I have started using this script to monitor some servers of my clients’. As said above, ideally, I should get this alert through SMS for a timely action. But I get my E-mails almost as quick as SMSes on my mobile. Thanks to Push E-mail. I have a Windows Mobile phone and a Zimbra (www.zimbra.com) based E-mail server and I’m using Z-Push (http://z-push.sourceforge.net/soswp/) to get Push-ed E-mails. Refer to an article on setting up Z-Push at http://pcquest.ciol.com/content/enterprise/2008/108070503.asp, written by me. With preliminary testing, this is indeed a simple and working script for me.

Writing this blog post using an app called moBlog (http://sampath.wordpress.com/moblog/). Downloaded the cab file directly on my Windows Mobile 6 device.
When you run the app for the first time, you need to create a profile. Note that the prompt asking for the URL to the login page is misleading. In case of WordPress you need to enter the URL to the first page and not the URL to wp-admin. That is, http://www.shekhargovindarajan.com was the URL in my case.

This app allows you to insert images, residing on your device, in your blog post. Like the one below:

You can select the category and add tags to the posts made from moBlog.

If you visit this blog http://www.shekhargovindarajan.com using a mobile device, you will see a plain and simple Blog page, which is quite readable on a mobile screen (white background, black foreground or text, no images, simple menu links).

Thanks to WordPress Mobile Edition plugin (http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress).

I tested it on Windows Mobile 6 PDA device (on my I-Mate 8502). While browsing the mobile version on the PDA, I clicked on the link “Exit the Mobile Edition” (near the bottom of the page) and it showed me the desktop edition/page (with blue background, images). However, to go back to the “Mobile optimized page”, I had to clear the cookies. This can be done as follows on Pocket IE (Internet Explorer).

On Pocket IE, click on Menu (on the right) > Tools > Options > Security (Tab). Next click on the button labeled “Clear Cookies”.

Browsing back to the site or a refresh showed me the Mobile optimized page again.

Also asked a friend of mine, who owns a Blackberry to browse the site. On Blackberry, “Exit the Mobile Edition” was reported to not working. It shows the the mobile optimized page even after clicking the link. Will need to check this further.

Update:No need to do delete the cookies in Windows Mobile. If you are browsing non-mobile optimized page (or the regular page), there is a link under each blog post which says “Return to the mobile edition”. Clicking on this link shows the mobile optimized page again. Missed this link in the cluttered regular page on the mobile screen.

Update (May 30, 2009): Have upgraded to 3.0.4. with the Carrington Mobile theme. Refer to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mobile-edition/ Following is a screenshot of how my blog looks on a Android phone (Android Dev Phone 1):
